How do we help rats feel comfortable being held?
Some are natural snuggle bunnies, but those who did not get held as babies
are probably going to feel vulnerable in your arms and hands.

Bonny is delighted to snuggle in my hands. From a young age she tended to flop down and spread out like a puddle. Here she erupts in "hiccuping," which resembles, but is not really, hiccuping. Vets I have consulted do not have an explanation. In my experience it's a sign of physiological excitement, often of happiness or delight, although Bonny once exploded in hiccuping when Melody threw her off her personal whole coconut. Bonny was furious and hiccuped wildly while she considered Melody's punishment. (I chose to scoop up Bonny and console her.)
