Read More"Glove Rat" Protects the Vulnerable Rat & Cereal Treats Calm the Pushy Rat
WARNING: Do Not attempt introductions in a small cage unless important conditions are met! These rats have a significant history of cagework, and the human wears a gloved hand. Territoriality in a cage may trigger more aggression and stress during introductions. This video is for educational purposes only and should not be used as a recipe for introducing rats to rats.
Right after the huge problem session with Jerry, Eme, and Chaaya (see that video on this page), neutered Jerry and intact Ms. Eme are given another chance to interact. Working with two rats instead of three proves much more manageable: This time using "glove rat" as well as adding cereal treats makes for a successful and calm outcome.
At the start, however, Eme Rat is again extremely intense with Jerry. She relentlessly shoves at him and attempts to clamber on top of him, often flinging herself at him. Gwen is able to block her, but she allows lots of contact because we know that Eme and Jerry are not going to aggressively draw blood. Allowing the rats to have "normal" exploratory and investigative, even semi-rough, interactions, can be helpful to rats being introduced, because through this activity they establish the social hierarchy. An integrated, healthy mischief of rats always establishes a social hierarchy.
Even so, Eme has a couple of serious surprises in store for Jerry - and Gwen! It takes lots of slow motion to see her pull off some particularly intense mischief.
After some wild and crazy pushiness, the addition of cereal treats results in a surprising turn of events. Eme calms down and proceeds to alternate between munching and trouncing on Jerry. At the end Jerry gets in some of his own sniffing efforts, and the session is deemed very successful.
(Note on the pink marks noticeable on Ms. Eme: Since Eme lives with her four daughters, who are also Pink-Eyed Whites, she is identified by red pen marks at the base of her tail and on her back between her shoulders.)
