Part One of a series. "Glove Rat" to help introduce pet rats? - See complete transcript at the bottom of this caption.
One step in the process to introduce new rats to current rats, the concept of "glove rat" is demonstrated with two rats who give their human a workout. This video starts off with lots of information, please read it, the intention is to keep rats and humans safe and enable to the ratsens to experience the best introductions possible.
Here's a note from the owner, Karen Borga, who is featured with her rats:
"Glove rat!
What is that?
For quite some time, I have been explaining my technique I call "glove rat."
I realize I really can't describe what I do and all the details.
I asked some of my rats if they would like to be in a movie.
This is one in a series (to come) demonstrating safety during intros.
I filmed while attempting to introduce my new rat, Jerry, to three residents, number kid rats named 26, 34 and 38.
The introductions did not go as easily as I had hoped.
In the middle of the movie, an altercation erupts between 26 and Jerry.
Glove rat to the rescue!
:-) ~~~~~~
The rats featured in this intro video are not the Wall Street Journal star rats. Those rats are 7, 8, and 11, and the Wall Street Journal video is here: http://tinyurl.com/wsjvideo

TRANSCRIPT - KAREN BORGA'S COMMENTS IN "GLOVE RAT":
Glove rat script
1:40 okay. Here we have a brand new table cloth that the rats have never seen before, tin foil with watermelon, litter box, and a cloth in case I need to do emergency separating.
2:09 I have one glove on and getting the other glove ready. Inside my shirt, I have Number 26. Number 26, He is a little bit overweight.
2:26 I am putting him back and I am going to get Jerry. Jerry is the new guy and we are going to try introducing Jerry to 26.
2:36 and then if it goes good I will add another rat and another rat.
2:44 This is number 26. Put him down. (Note: I misspoke, that is Jerry)
Put 26 down.
3:04 I am keeping my hand right next to Jerry, keeping my hand next to Jerry just in case there is any trouble.
3:24 I am just petting them, making sure, making sure nobody gets into any trouble.
3:36 Making sure, 26 is sniffing him, nice boy. Nice boy. Nice boy! Good boy! Oh, that is a good boy (high pitched voice)
3:42 Now 26 looks a little poofy, I am not 100% sure because as I said, he is overweight.
3:50 you know? I think he is poofing. So I will just keep my hand by Jerry.
4:06 Oh yeah, you could see him a little bit. He is poofy.
4:22 I just keep my hand right here because if anybody gets bit, I want it to be me.
4:44 Keeping my hand ready, just in case.
5:35 okay, so far it is going well. Jerry is kind of a little nervous Nellie, so he is wandering around, checking out everything. 26 isn’t sure.
6:06 Jerry goes yum, watermelon. Yum. Now as far as I know, the fact that Jerry took a little piece of watermelon is an excellent sign.
6: 20 Well, there you go. Almost a fight. Jerry went right underneath 26 and 26 started to do something and I am afraid so I stopped them right away.
6:53 repeat. Well there you go, etc.
7:09 okay, I am going to put 26 over there. Oh yes, you see how puffy he is? He is like a porcupine. So I am just going to keep my hands right around Jerry and make sure.
7:26 Now I don’t know if the camera is close enough if you can see his ears, he is moving them forward and back. Of course, I don’t know what the ears mean, but I am watching.
7:42 I am just keeping my gloved hand right here because if there is any trouble.
7:50 oh my goodness. So what I am going to do. I am going to pick up 26. and it is like “oh baby, oh sweetie sweetie, sweetie. it’s okay. It’s okay. It’s okay” Pick him up and have a little talk with him. Tell him “it’s okay.” (high pitched voice)
8:08 awww, Jerry is going to be your new friend. That’s right, good boy.
I am going to put 26 away because that’s enough. That’s enough for right now.
