Multi-Level Cages for Older Rats
Custom cages to help aging pet rats with increasing physical limitations.
IMPORTANT: These ramps are useful for their slope, and adding "steps", but the bar spacing should never be 1/2 inch by 1 inch. Chose ramps without bar spacing at all, or use wire 1/8 inch by 1/8, or 1/4 by 1/4 inch, at most. Better yet use material without holes, but which have ridges or other bumps to allow rats to grip.

This is a corrugated cardboard cat scratcher, the kind that comes with a 'frame" it sits in. I jam 2 shower curtain hooks through the frame at one end, and then hook them onto cage bars. Of course you need the right type of bar spacing for this to work. Then the slope of the ramp needs to be made very gradual by placing a cardboard box or other solid object at the other end, raising the end as needed. I have used this ramp type with every rat who has hind-end weakness and it works great. The corrugated card board offers great traction. And for some reason the rats mostly leave the cardboard alone; however I can replace the strip if needed.
